The short answer
Dentally’s clinical AI notes are built into Dentally. You dictate or type a summary and it drafts the note in the patient’s record. Each plan includes an allowance (45 notes per surgery a month on Essentials, 90 on Pro), then it is 20p a note. Recording the whole appointment is in beta, free while it rolls out, with pricing due in early 2027.
If your practice runs on Dentally and you want the note written inside it with no copy and paste, Dentally’s own tool is the natural first look. Squte works with Dentally or any other system by copy and paste. It records the whole appointment, writes the UK 17-section note, asks and saves the patient’s consent, and costs one price per clinician with no VAT to add.
Side by side
Dentally’s column uses only what Dentally publishes, read on 21 October 2026. We haven’t tested Dentally’s AI notes ourselves, so this compares published terms, not note quality.
| Question | Dentally AI notes | Squte |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | AI notes built into Dentally, the practice software from Henry Schein One. | A separate AI dental scribe that works alongside any practice software. |
| How a note starts | You dictate or type a short summary, usually after the appointment. Recording the whole appointment is in beta, rolling out as part of Dentally Pulse. | Squte records the whole appointment and, once you have recorded your voice sample, transcribes as you go. |
| How it is priced | An allowance comes with each Dentally plan: a limited trial on Starter, 45 notes per surgery a month on Essentials, 90 on Pro. After that, 20p a note on your next invoice. Appointment recording is free during the rollout, with pricing due in early 2027. | £25, £45 or £79 per clinician a month. Essential covers up to 300 visits a month; you are never billed extra. |
| VAT | Dentally’s plan prices are shown excluding VAT. The AI notes FAQ doesn’t say whether VAT is added to the 20p. | None to add. Squte is not VAT-registered, so the price you see is the full price. |
| Where it works | Inside Dentally only. Not available in Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland. | With Dentally, Software of Excellence, R4 or any other practice system. |
| How the note reaches Dentally | It is drafted in the patient’s record. You review it, then mark it complete and reviewed. | You copy the signed note and paste it into Dentally in one go. There is no direct integration yet. |
| Shape of the note | Follows your practice’s own templates. | The UK 17-section dental note, with teeth in UK notation (UR6) from what you say, or FDI if you prefer. |
| Consent | Before recording, you confirm the patient has agreed. The confirmation lasts six months per patient and can be withdrawn. Dentally says it is not a patient-facing consent form. | Squte shows a consent line to read before each recording. The patient’s answer is saved with the visit: the wording used, how it was given and the time. Squte will not transcribe a visit without it. |
| Audio | Processed in real time and not stored, so it can’t be replayed. The transcript is kept in the note’s audit trail. | Audio is deleted 30 days after the note is signed. The signed note and transcript stay as the clinical record. |
| Where data is kept | UK practices’ data is hosted on AWS Europe (Ireland). The AI models are reached through AWS Bedrock. | Stored encrypted on AWS in London. Speech recognition on Deepgram’s EU service; note writing on Google’s EU endpoint. |

What the allowance covers in a working month
Dentally’s allowance is counted per surgery, so how far it goes depends on how many notes each surgery writes. As a worked example, take one dentist in a one-surgery practice on Dentally Essentials writing 300 notes a month (your numbers will differ):
- 45 notes are included in the plan.
- The other 255 notes cost 20p each: £51 a month.
- If VAT is added to the 20p, as it is to Dentally’s plan prices, a practice that can’t reclaim VAT pays £61.20.
Squte Essential covers the same 300 visits for £45 a month, with no VAT to add. The comparison is for dictated notes: Dentally hasn’t yet priced recording the whole appointment. Most dental practices can’t reclaim VAT because dental care is exempt, which the true cost after VAT explains.
When Dentally’s own AI notes may suit you better
- Your practice runs on Dentally and you want the note drafted straight into the record, with no copy and paste.
- You prefer to dictate a short summary after the appointment rather than record the whole conversation.
- Your surgeries write fewer notes than the allowance, so the notes cost nothing extra.
- You want one supplier, and one data processing agreement, for practice software and notes.
- You want no audio kept at all: Dentally says it processes audio in real time and doesn’t store it.
When Squte may suit you better
- Your practice uses Software of Excellence, R4 or another system, or different systems across sites.
- You want the whole appointment recorded and written up now, at a price you know today.
- You want every note in the UK 17-section order with teeth in UK notation (UR6), without setting up templates.
- You want the consent line read and the patient’s answer saved with every visit.
- You want one price per clinician, with nothing added for extra notes or VAT.
The quickest way to judge is to read a note. See a sample Squte note, or try both on your own appointments: Squte’s trial runs for 14 days or 100 visits, whichever comes first.
How we made this page
We read Dentally’s clinical AI notes FAQ, its UK pricing page and its “Why AI notes are changing the game” article on 21 October 2026, and Scottish Dental Magazine’s report on Dentally Pulse. Dentally’s FAQ shows no calendar date, so terms may have changed since. We check them every month and date each change below.
